PATRICK J. GOONAN

Patrick Goonan joined the team at Rankin, Shuey, Mintz, Lampasona & Harper in February 2025 after nearly four years of practicing family law in Alameda and Contra Costa Counties. Patrick has negotiated and litigated complex spousal fiduciary duty issues, divisions of marital assets totaling more than $1 million, child custody disputes, and spousal support issues on both sides. He is intimately familiar with the discovery process, having used it to obtain relevant medical records, extensive financial records, and employment information, among other categories of documents and information, to use as evidence in contested hearings and settlement discussions. During law school and his preparation for the California Bar Exam (which he took during the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown), Patrick interned with various personal injury, immigration, and family law firms in the North Bay. He also interned at the San Francisco District Attorney’s Office, Homicide Division. In addition to his litigation, negotiation, and settlement experience, he brings his positive attitude, drive, and attention to detail to the Rankin Firm.
Patrick moved to the California Bay Area in the Fall of 2017 to attend law school at the University of San Francisco. He graduated in the top 25% of his class, with multiple CALI awards for academic excellence in Criminal Law, Contracts II, Legal Research and Writing II, and Community Property. He attended Ohio University and earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science in 2017. He was a Student Director for Ohio’s Club and Intramural Sports program.
Patrick grew up in rural Northwest Ohio, and he still does not understand why Californians say “soda” instead of “pop.” He thrives on experiencing the unknown, like deciding to move to San Francisco despite having never visited. Sports have always been part of his life, and you will find him at the ballpark any time the Boston Red Sox are in town. He recreationally utilizes his law degree to be the “rules lawyer” in his Dungeons and Dragons campaign with friends across the country.
