Ms. Shafer joined the firm in March of 2014 after practicing for 15 years primarily handling the defense of medical malpractice, legal malpractice and insurance bad faith cases. Her practice areas include counseling and representing medical and legal professionals in both malpractice actions and administrative proceedings, the defense of general contractors, subcontractors and product manufacturers in large-scale construction injury and defect actions, and general civil defense work in a diverse selection of personal injury and products liability actions. Ms. Shafer has represented a wide range of clients, including physicians and other allied health care providers, hospitals and other health care facilities, lawyers from varying practice areas, insurance companies, construction professionals, small business owners and individual insurance policy holders. She has represented clients in both state and federal courts throughout California, handling all aspects of litigation from inception through trial and post-judgment appeals.

General surgeon defendant in wrongful death/medical malpractice action based on death of a 55
year old man who suffered a perforation during a colonoscopy, San Francisco County Superior
Court (tried to defense verdict, second chair).


Hospital defendant in wrongful death action arising out of the death of a twenty year old male with chronic heart problems, Alameda County Superior Court (dismissed after several rounds of
successful demurrers).


Representation of a colorectal surgeon before the Medical Board arising out of treatment of two
HIV patients with anal dysplasia. (Matter resolved without any negative effect on physician’s license).


Defendant driver (an attorney) in an auto versus pedestrian case. Plaintiff claimed traumatic brain
injury and asked the jury to award $4 million, Los Angeles County Superior Court, Santa Monica
(tried to defense verdict, second chair).


Defendant homeowner (92 years old) where her tenants claimed they slipped and fell down her
stairs, Alameda County (tried to defense verdict).
